Occupational Therapy statement

Seeing my father’s incredible recovery from an accident – with the help of an occupational therapist – was a very personal event which inspired me to seek this profession; her commitment and expertise in helping him regain his independence showed her genuine passion for providing person-centred care. This assistance changed the healing processes, whilst inspiring me to help others, promoting self-sufficiency, and bringing a noticeable impact to the day-to-day lives of those dealing with physical obstacles.

One of the main factors which have shaped my preparedness for a career in my next endeavour has been my professional experiences in social care settings. the practical positions have sharpened a wide range of transferable abilities, giving me a realistic grasp of the area. My experience working in nurseries has taught me the value of patience and adaptability; essential skills when working with patients of all ages and abilities. moreover, working in a residential home has taught me the value of collaboration and effective organisational abilities in providing effective and humane care.

Studying Health and Social care has allowed me to ensure a safe environment where patients receive healthy relationships and safeguarding. This increased my understanding of diversity and equality, preparing me to offer inclusive care. Moreover, this has provided me with a complex nature of care whilst validating my choice to focus on occupational therapy. I am currently incorporating these lessons as I explore more of the modules within my course, allowing me to assist others both physically and socially.

Through my own independent study, I learned that occupational therapists (OTs) treat a wide variety of patients including those with physical impairments, mental health issues, developmental problems, and age-related issues. the diversity of clientele demonstrates the flexibility and range of abilities needed in this line of work. The interdisciplinary aspect of occupational therapy has also been highlighted by learning about the many contexts in which OTs work, including schools, mental health institutions, hospitals, and rehabilitation centres.

In my spare time, the variety of my interests has substantially contributed to my personal growth. Creating custom treatment programmes requires a high level of creativity and attention to detail which is shown through my love of cooking, as this has allowed me to understand how each step influences the outcome. Weekly hikes have given me the tenacity and fortitude, qualities which are necessary in this career. Furthermore, spending quality time with my friends and family has improved my empathy and communication skills; basic skills required through the walk of life. Lastly, reading thrillers has given me the ability to think critically and solve problems in a time-efficient manner.

My personal and academic experiences have driven this desire as well as provided me with a wide skill set required for this industry. working in community settings and schools, where I can use a holistic approach to serve a variety of individuals is very appealing to me. Motivated by my father’s transformational experience with a therapist, I want to make a comparable worldwide difference in the lives of my patients. I am steadfast in my dedication to providing person-centred treatment, and I work hard to make sure that every patient fully recovers and is well.
